LOS ANGELES (March 20, 2000) – Kaufman and Broad Home Corporation (NYSE:KBH) today announced it will begin collecting donations of clothing to support more than 14 non-profit organizations in six states. The clothing drive is part of Kaufman and Broad’s first companywide Spring Cleaning event, scheduled from March 21 through March 26. Company representatives are urging people with Big Hearts and Small Closets to go beyond the traditional Spring cleaning activities and donate to charity any old clothing that is clean, but is no longer being used.
"We all have something in the closet that we no longer wear or doesn’t fit anymore," said Bruce Karatz, chairman and CEO of Kaufman and Broad. "Instead of keeping it in the back of an over-crowded closet, why not donate it to someone who will be able to put it to good use?"
Donations will be received at every Kaufman and Broad new home community in Arizona, California, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico and Texas. Communities also will operate extended hours to accept the clothing daily from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.
The Company expects to gather thousands of outfits which will then be donated to non-profit organizations such as national groups like Dress For Success (Los Angeles), Goodwill Industries (Austin) and local groups like Wardrobe For Opportunity (San Francisco), The Samm Shelter (San Antonio) and Mi Casa Resource Center (Denver).
Many adults looking for work to support their families feel pressured and insecure because they don’t have appropriate clothing for a job interview. Having appropriate, professional attire contributes to the self-confidence needed to land a job and become economically self-sufficient.
Similarly, children who go to school without warm clothing or who are teased by other children because of ripped or worn clothing are sometimes found to perform poorly in the classroom, while those who feel confident about what they wear tend to be more confident in their studies.
"People remember our organization during the winter holiday season, but we need donations throughout the year. Spring cleaning is a great opportunity to clean out your closet and help someone in need," said Shirley James, executive director, Dress For Success in Los Angeles. "The people from Kaufman and Broad who organized this project are clearly big-hearted, we hope the rest of the community will join in their spirit of generosity."
