Home Is Where The Bart Is: Kaufman And Broad Hands Keys To "The Simpsons' House" Over To Kentucky Grandmother

Barbara Howard, Grandmother of 13, Wins House Giveaway, Says She's Finally On a Lucky Streak

HENDERSON, NV (December 10, 1997) -- Barbara Howard, 63, left her old converted barn in Richmond, Kentucky this morning and arrived in Las Vegas for the first time in her life, ready to move into a brand new home and a whole new world -- the world of Homer and Marge Simpson.

After months of anticipation, Mrs. Howard was just named the winner of THE SIMPSONS' House Giveaway, a nationwide contest in partnership with Kaufman and Broad Home Corporation, Fox Broadcasting and Pepsi-Cola Company. Kaufman and Broad built the life-size, four-bedroom replica of THE SIMPSONS' animated abode and unveiled the completed residence in August to contest hopefuls. (Some 35,000 people have toured the home since September.)

Today, Kaufman and Broad put the keys to the one-of-a-kind cartoon house in Mrs. Howard's anxious hands and took her on her first look-see of the residence built to the Simpsons' unusual specifications. Joined by her daughter Loretta and grandson Elvin, Mrs. Howard entered the front door and discovered her new corn-cob curtains, furniture in glowing primary colors, built-in mouseholes and arched doorways built to be high enough for Marge Simpsons' hair and wide enough for Homer's hips.

Mrs. Howard is a long-time fan of THE SIMPSONS and watches the show regularly, even in re-runs, often sharing the fun with members of her large family -- which includes 8 brothers and sisters, 5 children, 13 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. She noted that after a long, hard year for her family (including several illnesses) winning this special house proves her luck is on the upswing. And what better place to be when feeling lucky than Las Vegas!

"Kaufman and Broad has made a lot of people happy in their new homes, but this is a truly special feeling. Sometimes fate really does have a way of choosing the right person. We couldn't have imagined a more deserving winner for this contest -- a true Simpsons' fan who couldn't wait to see the house and share the excitement with her family," said Bruce Karatz, Chairman of Kaufman and Broad. "We wish all the Howards a wonderful holiday season 'round the Simpsons' hearth."

Barbara Howard had watched the 1997 season premiere episode of THE SIMPSONS (which is celebrating its 10th Anniversary), during which the house was to be given away, but was disappointed to learn she did not have the winning number. Howard then went out to buy a single pack of Brisk Ice Tea and sent in just one game piece for the second-chance drawing.

"I didn't know it was possible to laugh and cry at the same time, but that's what I did when I found out I was the winner," said Howard. She described her current house as being very different from THE SIMPSONS' House. "We have a dirt road that's nothing but trouble," she explained, "and if the weather's bad we can't even get the mail."

Howard had seen the blitz media coverage of THE SIMPSONS' House unveiling this summer and knew from the moment she saw it that she wanted to win the house. "I just knew the family would love it," she said. "I can't wait to settle in on Homer's couch and watch THE SIMPSONS." Howard also said she is looking forward to spending time in Las Vegas, the City of Luck. "I've been getting my seat and my fingers ready to spend some time at the slot machines," she joked.

THE SIMPSONS' House was built by Kaufman and Broad to bring the make-believe residence of America's favorite animated family to vivid true life. The Kaufman and Broad design team watched 96 episodes of THE SIMPSONS before drafting the first blueprints -- and looked through more than 7,000 color swatches to match the bold, bright colors of THE SIMPSONS' television home. The house is fully decorated with Simpson-replica furniture, clothing and household clutter. Outside, Bart's swing set and Homer's barbecue await family afternoons, and the driveway has a permanent "oil stain" from Homer's car.

THE SIMPSONS' House is located in Kaufman and Broad's Springfield community -- named after THE SIMPSONS' television home town. Here, Kaufman and Broad has also built 151 affordably-priced homes featuring three to five bedrooms.

Currently celebrating its 40th Anniversary, Kaufman and Broad is the West's largest home builder -- moving more than 10,000 families into new homes each year. Known for its marketing innovations, THE SIMPSONS' House is the latest in a line of highly creative promotions developed by Kaufman and Broad. Twenty years ago, the company built a model home on the roof of the largest shopping mall in Paris, France which received nearly a half million visitors. It is estimated that more than 150 million people around the world have seen THE SIMPSONS' House on television.

Los Angeles-based Kaufman and Broad Home Corporation (NYSE:KBH) has operating divisions in California, Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Colorado, Utah, Mexico and France.
