Calling all Union City students! We're holding the 1st Annual Recycling Art Contest and you're encouraged take part. Artwork can be a poster or maybe a sculpture, as long as it's made with 70% recycled materials. The theme of this year's competition is Going Green in Union City! Prizes will be awarded in several categories according to grade level, with the winning pieces featured in the Union City Leisure Services Spring Activity Guide.
Once again, recycling of holiday trees will be easier than ever. Tri-CED will be collecting trees between December 26 and January 31. Sorry, NO flocked trees accepted. On your regular collection day, simply set your tree at the curb or place inside the green yard waste cart. Trees will be hauled to the compost facility, where they will be used to make a beneficial mulch and compost.
Union City has scheduled more than two dozen events throughout 2009 to celebrate our 50th birthday. You won't miss a single event if you have a specially produced golden anniversary wall calendar. Each month features a photograph of unsung community heroes. The calendar makes a great gift or stocking stuffer.
If you're a telephone subscriber in Union City, you may be eligible for a refund from the City. Until recently, Union City required telephone companies to charge a 911 fee on all phone bills. The money collected was to be used to pay for the costs of providing emergency police and fire dispatch communications. The fee was successfully challenged in court and as a result the City has initiated a process to refund any City-imposed 911 fees to those residents who paid the fee over the past 12 months.
The City of Union City encourages people to become involved in their local community. One way to do so is to serve in an advisory capacity on one of the City's various commissions. The City is currently accepting applications to fill alternate positions on the Human Relations Commission, Park and Recreation Commission, Planning Commission and the Senior Citizens Commission.

Scholarships are available only for eligible low income students from Barnard White, Cesar Chavez and Alvarado middle schools. Business owners should be aware that official inspectors always arrive in an official marked vehicle, not a private, unmarked car. Business owners should always ask inspectors for identification and official inspectors will present it willingly.
